About Prof. James Stephen

Prof. M. James Stephen is a distinguished academician, researcher, administrator, and social innovator with more than 24 years of teaching and research experience and over 12 years of academic and institutional leadership. He is currently serving as the National Chair Professor, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair, Andhra University, under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, while also serving as Professor of Computer Science Engineering.

Throughout his illustrious career, Prof. Stephen has successfully combined academic excellence with visionary leadership. As the Registrar (Additional Charge) of Andhra University, he played a pivotal role in steering the University towards achieving the prestigious NAAC A++ Accreditation with a record CGPA of 3.74 out of 4.00, placing Andhra University among the top higher educational institutions in India. He has also served as the Dean of the A.U. Trans-disciplinary Research Hub (TDR-HUB), Member of the Executive Council of Andhra University, Principal of an affiliated engineering college for over nine years, and Founding Mentor of the American Corner, Andhra University, where he promoted international academic collaboration and student development.

A prolific scholar with an interdisciplinary academic background, Prof. Stephen holds two doctoral degrees in Computer Science & Systems Engineering and Commerce & Management Studies, along with multiple postgraduate qualifications including M.C.A., M.Phil. (Computer Science), M.Div., M.B.A., and M.Tech. His research contributions include 58 patents and copyrights, 15 national and international research grants, 14 authored books, four edited volumes, and over 80 peer-reviewed research publications in reputed journals and conference proceedings. He has successfully guided 14 Ph.D. scholars, with several more currently pursuing their doctoral research under his supervision.

Prof. Stephen's research and academic vision focus on leveraging technology for social transformation, particularly in addressing societal challenges through innovation, interdisciplinary research, and inclusive development. His work reflects a strong commitment to integrating emerging technologies with public policy, education, governance, and sustainable development.

An internationally recognized academic, Prof. Stephen has visited several prestigious universities, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, New York University, Arizona State University, the University of California, Purdue University, Duke University, Brunel University, London Metropolitan University, and WSG University, Poland, among others. He has delivered keynote addresses and invited lectures at several international universities, conferences, and academic forums.

He had the unique distinction of representing India as the sole participant in the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) on University Partnerships, sponsored by the Government of the United States.

A recipient of 14 national and international honours, including a full scholarship from Duke University, USA, Prof. James Stephen is widely respected for his integrity, visionary leadership, multidisciplinary scholarship, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
